IIT Bombay (IITB)

About IIT Bombay (IITB)

Established in 1958, IIT Bombay is a technical and research university. In 1961, the Parliament decreed IITs as Institutes of National Importance. It is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. It is reputed for the quality of its faculty and the outstanding calibre of students graduating from its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The Institute has consistently been ranked among the best in its peer group – it was ranked among the Top 50 engineering colleges in the world by the QS World University rankings. It has also been adjudged as the best Indian university in the same report. IIT Bombay was also granted the Institution of Eminence (IoE) status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2018. The Institute’s proposal for the same is available here. IIT Bombay also secured the 4th position in ‘Overall’ category and the 3rd position in ‘Engineering’ category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

IIT Bombay is academically organised into 16 Academic Departments, 1 School, 19 Centres and 4 Interdisciplinary Programmes. On an average ~2500 students pass out of the institute every year. IITB has MoUs with several universities in Asia, Australia, Europe and USA. These MoUs facilitate collaboration through faculty and student exchange programmes.

Corporates, foundations and alumni continue to engage with the institute to help accelerate its journey towards excellence – the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management and the Desai Sethi Center for Entrepreneurship are outcomes of such collaborations.

The Institute is in the process of executing it’s strategic plan for the period 2017-22 – the outcome of a deep consultative exercise across all stakeholders.

IITB-DRF

About IIT DRF

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), an autonomous institute and a deemed university, has established the IITB Development and Relations Foundation (IITB-DRF), an independent non-profit organization (Section 8 Company). The IITB-DRF is set up as a development organization for the institute, to focus on outreach, cultivation and stewardship of the alumni, corporate and philanthropic donor community, and other stakeholders. Through this, it aims to help the institute build and sustain world class infrastructure, drive cutting-edge research, innovation and scholarship, in collaboration with the faculty and students of IITB.

IIT Bombay has an extensive alumni base of about 60,000 alumni which is growing with 2,500 students graduating from the institute every year. Several alumni remain engaged with the Institute through alumni chapters (30+ chapters across India, USA and globally), social media and periodic newsletters. They also participate in recruitment, research collaboration and non-profit interests. Reunions organized by the Institute annually serve as a stimulant to deepen their engagement – particularly for milestone reunions. The frequency and quality of these engagements determines the strength of the alumni-institute relationship. IITB-DRF already has a strong foundation, with many of the IITB alumni being strong patrons of the Institute, and having donated significant amounts over the years.

Indian and global corporates are keenly interested in developing a relationship with the Institute. Their interests range from hiring at the Institute, to driving research collaborations with various departments and to contributing to nation building by contributing to the Institute’s development. Similarly, several reputed high net worth individuals (“HNIs”) are keen donors towards philanthropic causes, nation development and nurturing research. Well defined and purposeful engagement with these corporations and HNIs can cultivate them as long-term donors for the Institute.

IITB-DRF is a young organization with staff of its own and assisted by partners such as the IITB Heritage Foundation and the IITB Alumni Association. It is an ambassador for the institute in the external ecosystem – building long-term sustainable relationships with the donor community, helping develop and share the narrative on the strategic priorities for the institute, along with the progress being made.

Organization Culture

IITB-DRF functions within the largely flat hierarchy of IIT Bombay. The various departments of IIT Bombay work together as peers and engender an environment of intellectual pursuit and academic excellence.

Collaboration and excellence are cornerstones of the success of IITB-DRF.
