  • About:
Decarbonization of petrochemical, gas processing and petroleum refineries is required to achieve the climate change mitigation targets. Different technological solutions have been proposed for the same. Selection of the appropriate technology will depend on the decarbonization potential, cost, scalability, and technology readiness level. It is, therefore, important to rigorously compare promising options and rank them in terms of suitability for petroleum, petrochemical and gas processing sector. Simultaneously, detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) is required for the petrochemical and gas processing sector. Unlike petroleum refineries, these sectors may have major impacts after production stage as well as during the waste disposal stage. Recycling and remanufacturing strategies may also affect the life cycle impacts. Detailed LCA, which includes the cradle-to-grave scope, is essential, and has not been done in the Indian context. This work will address these knowledge gaps.
  • Position Title: PROJECT RESEARCH SCIENTIST

The goal is to determine the overall impacts of the petrochemical and polymer products produced from gas processing and identify the emission hotspots. Additionally, process performance benchmarks will be identified to achieve specific decarbonization targets. The work will involve developing detailed energy and mass balance for the gas processing facility identified by the industry collaborator. Process engineering fundamentals will be required to validate the data. Active collaboration with industry partner will be involved to first understand the process and then develop the LCA model. The scope also includes collection data related to the use phase of the petrochemical products with the help of the industry partners and its customers. The data will be used in conjunction with a commercial LCA database to perform detailed LCA.A formal report compiling all the data, models, and results will be the final deliverable of the project.
  • Key Responsibilities:
The job will involve following key responsibilities.
Take the lead in understanding the complete process and develop LCA models.
Perform data collection wherever necessary with the help of industry partner.
Analyze and validate data for quality and consistency.
Perform LCA calculations, analyze results, and identify key learnings.
Prepare a detailed report of the LCA study.
